Electrical Technician

Description (Public)

The Electrical Technician inspects, maintains, tests and repairs high-voltage substation equipment under the direct supervision of a maintenance engineer (substations), ensuring reliable power transmission and quick restoration of supply after outages.

Duties, Roles and Responsibilities

Conduct routine inspections and maintenance on substation equipment, including transformers, switchgear, AVRs and auxiliary systems
Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on transformers, switchgears and other electrical equipment
Manage inventory of replacement parts and tools, ensuring all necessary supplies are readily available
Coordinate maintenance schedules to minimise downtime and maintain operational efficiency
Document and report on maintenance activities including repairs and inspections conducted
Respond to emergency outages and equipment failures, working to restore power as quickly as possible
Ensure compliance with safety regulations and environmental standards in all maintenance activities

Qualifications, Education and Competencies

Qualifications & Experience:

Must possess either a National Diploma or a Higher Diploma in Electrical or Electromechanical Engineering
Must have at least two (02) years of relevant experience in maintaining high-voltage power transformers and switchgear
Specialised training in high-voltage equipment maintenance will be an added advantage
